Standing on Giants Shoulders

Today, I was humbled.  Today, I remembered the reasons why I became a trainer in the first place. Today, I was delivering Basic Life Support to an absolutely astounding family group of carers, for a young lady with extremely complex needs. But man! What an inspirational young lady she is! NOTHING gets her down.  Ventilated, intubated, very limited mobility, has had nil by mouth since she was born, and her favourite pastime is socialising with freinds and posting images of all the wonderful meals shes been out to, even though she cannot partake.  Enthusiastic, compassionate, extremely perceptive, and leading such a happy and full life that put the rest of us to shame.  The more her family told me about her, the more I wanted to meet her. She agreed, and I was taken upstairs to meet her.  These big brown eyes peered out at me like a frightened child from under the quilt, and we chatted for about ten minutes, to say she blew me away is an understatement.  NEVER, have I seen such resolve, such positivity in the face of adversity, and I was truly humbled.

I recently completed Taye Trainings “Training 4 influence” course, and I doubt that the session could have been tailored so well, or have been as engaging without it.  My values came out of the harbour in full sail. Yes, the training met all the UKRC guidelines, but I was able to add in so much more, Dysphagia, stroke, etc., to make it appropriate for her needs and so what if I went over time? (Marianne will tell you that I ALWAYS run over! Lol) but when the cohort are so engaged and passionate about caring for their little sister, a trainer WANTS to give as much as he or she can, so my ‘half day’ that should have ended at 12:30 ended at 4:30pm, after a further hour or so just sitting on the floor with them, drinking tea and eating sweets, just shooting the breeze and even playing with a beautiful little girl who is 1 next week (and normally afraid of men, but we were mates in no time!). They were so much more than simply ‘clients’…they were Tribe.  If I’d have known beforehand how the day was going to pan out, hell, I’d have waived my fee.  As it is, they’ve invited me back for more training, so they’ll definitely be getting ‘mates rates’!

Sorry for the rambling, but I just wanted to share what an absolutely wonderful day we had, I can’t wait to go back, and Marianne, when I do, YOU’RE coming with me!
